Welcome Dreamers!
“It takes a community to maintain a community.” — Judith Ivy, 2008
This site is designed for my students in Sociology, Women’s Studies, and Communication, but anyone is Welcome! The materials on this website are inspired by Dr. Paul A. Elsner, Chancellor Emeritus of the Maricopa Community Colleges in Maricopa County, Arizona. They are based on the areas that, according to Dr. Elsner, students will most need to be able to think about effectively in order to live well in the 21st century.
Students need not only know basic definitions and historical understandings of ideas, but also ways of categorizing, valuing and acting upon ever changing local, national and world conditions.
With more than 6 billion of us on the planet, one third of whom live on $2 per day or less [that would be an annual income of $730 or less] let us learn to live together with kindness and wisdom, working together to create a better world. Living with the wellbeing of others in mind is not an “impossible” dream, but a goal we can all address daily, through countless small decisions toward kindness and intelligence. No great advancement–from the use of electrical energy to light our homes, to the development of vaccines against deadly diseases –was created without first being someone’s idea. And when this idea is shared as a vision of a possible future, someone says that it is “impossible.” –That’s how you know it’s a great idea!
So create and hold your finest ideas of a future we can create together for this planet. This website is for you, the student creator. It is planned to provide these basic topics to you, with two more I’m adding myself,
Pages on this website offer basic notes as to the nature and scope of all the topics, along with some links to get the student started on his or her personal processes of research and discovery. I hope you enjoy using this site, and send feedback about your experiences, so that the site can be continuously improved.
Some topics aren’t finished, or even started, yet—but it’s good to get the site up and running, so that work on it can continue in a timely manner, and also to offer what is available at this time. Your input and suggestions about the content are very much appreciated.
